sE Electronics X1 R Ribbon Microphone

The X1 R is a rugged ribbon for any purpose.
Drawing on some of the technologies in our Voodoo ribbon mics, the X1 R is a vintage-modern hybrid that provides all the inherent smoothness of a hand-crafted ribbon mic, but with more versatility, durability, and ease of use than the delicate ribbons of yesteryear.
The second addition to the X1 Series, the X1 R brings the magic of traditional ribbon mics into the modern age with a tough construction that can handle any SPL. This is a ribbon you can take on the road.
The sE X1 R ribbon microphone is the new high performance passive ribbon from sE Electronics. The sE Electronics X1 R is suited to a variety of recording applications including guitar cabs, overhead drums, brass, woodwind, strings, commercial broadcast and voice-over.
This state of the art ribbon element enclosed by top-grade Neodymium magnets boasts some of our latest ribbon microphone technologies. We have combined our traditional ribbon technology with some of the mechanical elements of our own Voodoo microphone HF (High Frequency) extension technology to bring you a classic sounding ribbon mic with a gentle HF lift.
The X1 R doesn’t quite offer the full-frequency response performance of the Voodoo VR1, VR2, or the widely acclaimed Rupert Neve Signature Series RNR1 – but its hybrid old and new ribbon technology gives you all the natural beauty of the ribbon sound, but with more versatility and ease of use than the majority of ribbons on today’s market.
The X1 R comes standard with a mic clip that will securely attach it to any mic stand, but fits the Isolation Pack if a shockmount solution is desired.

“Right away I found that what it delivered was actually rather more useful than what I’ve got out of many other ribbon mics I’ve tried…electric guitar sounded great right away — I got pretty much what I was hearing in the room from the amp even before thinking about adding EQ. The top end had presence and projection but with no trace of added fizz, and lows came across as solid and full of authority, so I award it full marks in this role.”
– Paul White, Sound On Sound (full review)
“Very warm and punchy, and not at all harsh or thin like some condensers can be on guitar amps. I have used it on sax as well and was very happy.”
– Brian O. (full review via B&H)
“The sE X1 R looks cool, the build quality is impressive and it does everything you could expect from a microphone of this type. It also comes closer to the traditional fat-and-treble-attenuated tone of old-skool ribbon mics than some of SE’s more cutting-edge ribbon designs.”
– MusicTech Magazine (full review)
“There can sometimes be a perception that ribbon mics are only suitable for very specific recording tasks but the X1 R seems like a great all-rounder and a useful alternative to a capacitor or cardioid model when you want a different kind of sound, perhaps a smoother and more rounded quality.”
– Hollin Jones, AskAudioMag (full review)
“For the money I don’t think you can get a better ribbon mic – that’s why I give it 5 stars.”
– Eric Miley (full review via Sweetwater Sound)
